Postcards from our Road Trip…

We arrived home from the most amazing road trip we could have ever hoped for, this afternoon! It was truly splendid and I know our children and Richard and I, will remember it for years to come… We managed to break up the journey into quite a few stages, so that we didn’t spend too much time driving, I think the longest stretch was a 5 hour drive from the Drakensburg to the Port Edward on the South Coast of Natal, South Africa. Kye really does not enjoy the car too much but he coped rather well this time:)

I have returned to the most wonderful Spring garden, the growth while we have been away has been tremendous. Blossoms everywhere, our Oak trees are GREEN! And our asparagus is over a metre high! Love it! I have started with the first load of laundry, there will be many as you can imagine… We had a lovely time… now for some photos…

The landscape on the road to the Drakensburg.

Early morning at Alpine Heath where we stayed for the first 3 days of our trip…

Port Edward Beach, Natal South Coast.

This is a Vervet monkey, there were so many at the resort where we were staying and they would visit us most mornings. This one is sitting on our balcony. They would just appear from nowhere out of the thick bush.

Jen, Erin and Caiden in the surf…

The first morning we were out at the beac at 6 30 am, it was amazing…

Fishermen…

I love photos of lighthouses…

This rock was beautiful, it has been turned into a bowl by the erosion of the sea water…

Some special reading time with dad, Kye brought with his favourite book by Jan Brett, The Mitten

This was the last stop on our journey in the Midlands, Bellwood Cottages, it was a wonderful place, a working stud farm and trout farm. We had fun rowing on the dam in the canoes…

I have missed this space and I am so glad to be back, take care,
xo
Linda

Oh it is so beautiful there! We have a road trip coming up very soon, and we are all looking forward to it. It’s not terribly long but much longer than we’ve attempted with 4 kids – hoping it goes smoothly.

Lovely. You have a good eye. The beach shots were unquestionably dramatic – both because of the smooth pallet, and because of the stunning light. I was a bit taken aback by the wave shots – the children out there with a seeming wall of ocean coming at them. For some reason, the water had great weight, and I was shockingly aware of the connection of those waves to the vast bulk of the ocean. I want to go to the stud farm. Of course, every one of these photos challenged my assumptions about Africa, tiny American that I am.

I’m SO glad you shot these things. I’m SO glad you let me see them. But this is what we do for each other isn’t it? Widen the world by showing each other our bits of it? I hope you have more. (My favorite was Daddy reading to Kye – that is the core of the earth.)

Dear Linda, When I look at your photos it makes me miss home so much. It’s all so familiar. When we lived in R/Bay we had so many monkey’s in our yard, they would always try to get into the kitchen and raid the refrigerator, lovely little creatures. The strength of the waves I remember so well as a child. All beautiful photos. Your children looked like they had a wonderful time.
My children aren’t fond of cars either so we don’t travel long,, 5 hours has been the limit if they nap in the car, 2-3 hours seem to be more comfortable for them. We will probably do an overnight through Nevada to reach California because it’s mostly desert. xxxx

What beautiful photos – I can see why many Aussies go there and vice versa….it is similar in many ways to our landscape. Thank you for sharing, especially the monkeys, which we do not have lol

What a beautiful series of photos, Linda! It looks like you had an amazing time. I especially love the shot of the Vervet monkey. Elizabeth did a report and model of a Vervet monkey for school 2 years ago when her class was studying Africa. Very cool that you were able to hang out with some.
