Slouch Hat Knitting with my Girls

There’s nothing like sitting outside in the afternoon shade knitting, with the chickens to keep us company. I love afternoons like this. The girls and I have decided to knit a project together, a slouch hat, so we scoured Ravelry for a pattern and found the Journey Slouch Hat pattern. Such a sweet and easy pattern, it knits up really fast because of the thickness of the wool. I have quite a lot of luxury hand spun yarn that I spun up a few months ago. This particular skein is silk, flax and merino. I found the colours of this roving striking and didn’t know what I was going to knit with it but then this slouch hat pattern came along and I thought, perfect!

The only problem, and this is sad, is that I might just run out of wool! Oh please no! So hold thumbs for me, I am knitting slowly and mindfully now, just hoping that I will finish in this yarn. If not, I will have to finish in a lilac Merino, which will look ok but I would love to finish in the variegated hand spun, so we’ll see…

Erin has already finished her first hat, she knitted it in deep purple boucle Mohair yarn and a Merino wool held together. She is so proud of her slouch hat. I think she has done a fantastic job. Jen and Eri have both learned to knit in the magic loop technique now and have also learned a few new stitches with this pattern that they haven’t knitted before. Oh, how happy it makes me that my girls love to knit!!

Jen is knitting with two Merino yarns for a beautiful variegated effect, I will post photos as soon as she is finished.

Erin is knitting her second hat in a grey hand spun Merino.

Have wonderful day
Love
Linda, Jen and Erin

What a wonderful day! I would give anything to be sitting in your yard, knitting, while the chickens are busy doing chicken things. It looks so peaceful. My 3 granddaughters, ages 5, 7, & 8 want to learn to knit and/or crochet. I KNOW I am not a teacher, but, my LYS only teaches the little ones on Saturdays and that only works for the one that lives with me. Maybe I will have to take her, sit and watch how they teach Luiza, and then teach Ella and Mia.

I love that variegated hand spun – so talented you are! It is a lovely thing to be able to craft together with your girls – my girls aren’t all that interested, but maybe I can tempt them with a great pattern. Thumbs definitely crossed for the yarn! I never know whether to knit faster or slower to make it stretch further!!!

That looks like the perfect way to spend an afternoon. I can not wait for warm weather (and a yard to have chickens in…but that’s a little more long term!).

The hats are all beautiful! you all did a great job!

I have my fingers crossed that your yarn lasts the whole hat! with my current scarf I was worried about running out of the wool but it looks like it will be enough luckily.
I love that you three are knitting the same project, this has inspired me to see if my mum would like to find a knit along project with me, we almost always like the same clothes so I think this would be fun!

How lovely that you can enjoy knitting with your girls. What are the chickens eating? they look like they are enjoying it whatever it is.
Hope you have enough yarn to finish.

Actually, when I read the first bit and saw that shot of the circle of chickens, I thought you meant THEY were the girls you were talking about and I got this vision of all those chicken girls somehow knitting in the round with their beaks right there in front of me. But I understand now, and will not suspect the chickens of any such shinanigans. Erin looks swell in her hat. What eyes.

Linda I loved this post. How lovely that both your girls knit and your own handspun wonderfulness too. Love the colours of your hat and have my fingers and toes crossed that you don’t run out of yarn before the end. The pattern looks good too. You will all be well set up for winter 🙂

    Lovely lovely hats girls….

Gorgeous yarn Linds. So nice seeing you all knit together. I really have to get back to spinning all that roving I have accumulated in the loft. When I see your wool, I get the goozies.

Have a lovely evening my friend.
