Our three Sea Scouts

Yesterday was the Sea Scouts Sailing Regatta. Our three oldest were in attendance and loved every minute of it. Scouts has been so enriching for them and has taught them how to accomplish things we couldn’t have imagined. They can rig and de-rig sailboats, sail and tie all sorts of complicated knots from memory! When they’re out there on the water it’s like they are speaking a language only they can understand, it’s tremendous. I’m one proud mamma!

Rowing through the Night

Rowing1

Hello friends,

I know this shot doesn’t have the greatest photo quality but it’s very important and has a special story. This photo was take by Erin on her cell phone at sunrise, Saturday morning on the Vaal river. Jenna and Erin set off at midnight on Friday with a crew of 5 other sea scouts to row 80 km down the Vaal river. This activity is called the Gig Challenge and it takes place every year.

It took them 21 and a half hours of continuous rowing to reach the finish. They rowed under the stars and moon early  Saturday morning and had to fight a little against high winds on Saturday afternoon. They are exhausted right now but so thrilled with their accomplishment. We are very proud of our girls and everyone on that gig!

Yesterday we travelled through to Edenvale to watch the junior and senior Sea Scouts compete in their yearly canoe polo tournament. They are actually playing in an old quarry that has filled up with water. Both Erin and Caiden took part and it was wonderful to watch them work together with their teammates, deciding on different strategies and game plans. They are exhausted, stiff and sunburned today (even though they applied copious amounts of sun block) but so thrilled with their experience! I can honestly say that joining Sea Scouts has enriched our children’s lives tremendously, they love it and have learned SO much.

Have a wonderful week:)
