Sea Glass1

We’ve been counting down the days for our road trip over the past few weeks. We live inland and haven’t visited the sea for years, so Richard and I decided it was time to take the kids on a holiday! Oh, the excitement!! Packing the car, choosing what to take… of course there was lego… We arrived at 4pm yesterday afternoon after a 7 and a half hour drive, we hardly noticed it though, it was wonderful.

This morning, we awoke to Caiden running into our room telling us there were whales in the ocean!! We all went out on the balcony and there they were!! How special…

PS If you would like to enter the beautiful giveaway for a hand knit bunny from Simply Playing go here.

See you soon with more beach photos and the yarn for my Narwhal that I’m going to knit while at the beach!

Crafting

A few days ago our family ventured off on a road trip to Cullinan, a beauiful and hostoric diamond mining town. I was so plesantly surprised that this quaint town was so near to where we live! We went on a public holiday, the main street was closed off and small pavement shops lined the road, how wonderful, my treasure seeking heart lept with excitement! There wasn’t one yarn shop in sight but that was ok, there were so many other sights to see.

The steam train had also arrived in town that day and all the restaurants were full and had waiting lists. We put our name down and walked around from shop to shop. The girls and I found the most divine shabby chic shop called Rust in White, we had so much fun there, looking at all their treasures and then out into the garden we went only to discover even more delightful bric a brac and treasures of the old rusted enamel pot kind! (Love that stuff!!)

We met up with Richard and the boys later, ate lunch and then made our way to the Mc Hardy House. It’s a beautiful old house that belonged to the Mc Hardy family who once lived in Cullinan many years ago. Mr Mc Hardy was the manager of the Cullinan diamond mine there in 1903. Their home has been preserved exactly as they left it, I love visiting old homes and discovering how people once lived, seeing their photos on the walls and to think that they once occupied that very space and are now gone…

Don’t you just love the crafting table with the wip?

I can’t wait to visit there again, it’s just an hour away from where we live, a little pocket of paradise…

Saturday Garden Journal

Today we packed the car with plenty of water, hats and sunscreen and headed off on a short road trip to the Margaret Roberts Herbal Centre in the NW Province. It was a really hot and humid day but the surroundings were so beautiful that we were able to ignore the heat for short periods of time.

My poor family found a shady spot while my mom-in-law and I looked through each and every one of the plants that were for sale. There were culinary herbs, herbs for healing and plants to make herbal insect repellent sprays. This was all so very exciting, (don’t you also think so?) I could have stayed there for hours just reading about what each herb was capable of and then thinking furiously where I could possibly plant more plants in our garden.

Caiden discovered a Labyrinth, it was beautiful, we walked it together, weaving in and out of each narrow path… He then commented, “Mom, this is such a beautiful tree, if you listen carefully, you can hear the bees buzzing all around it”. I was so happy that this boy noticed the beautiful tree and the lovely bees…

After all that searching through the many plants and listening to many sighs from my ravenous family, (they were so sweet to wait while their mom ran crazily around looking at plants) we did enjoy a delicious lunch and then packed these beauties in the above photo into the boot of the car.

I found lovely Lavender that I intend to plant around the chicken enclosure to keep the mosquitoes at bay AND I found a guava tree! This was such an excellent discovery, I have never found one before at a nursery. When I used to live at the coast we had a huge tree in our garden and it gave us the most wonderful guavas that my Gran used to stew, so, of course I had to buy this tree. They are very frost sensitive, so I think it will have to live in a large pot and will have to be moved under the veranda each winter to protect it from frost.

I also found some blackberries and a sweet pepper plant, I intent to bottle these peppers, we love them. My mom-in-law was so kind to buy us a Macadamia nut tree, how wonderful!! Thanks mom:)

PS Thanks so much to everyone who favorited my little Hippo Pattern, she has been on the Ravelry hot list most of the day, it has been very exciting to see her up there,  so thank you all!!

It’s almost time for the Natural Suburbia Christmas Ornament Swap again, so if you are keen to take part, the post should be going up for that tomorrow.

Have a wonderful weekend.
