Jenna is 16 years old today!

We all got up really early this morning to give Jen her gifts, make her a special breakfast and then take her to scouts to write her oars charge exam. I know… “An exam?” you say, “on her birthday?” The thing is, she has been looking forward to achieving this advancement for ages and the date was set for the 9th of June, her birthday. She really doesn’t mind though, she was so excited to join the other sea scouts who will also be doing their practical and written exams today. (I did try and talk her out of it a few weeks ago but then she explained how important it was to her and this made me feel very proud of her dedication).

Erin baked her the most wonderful birthday cake, I’m sure Jen will love it when she sees it tonight.

It’s difficult to fathom how quickly time has passed, 16 years ago you were so tiny and now you have grown into a beautiful and confident young woman. We love you Jen and are so blessed to know you. xxx

I received a beautiful parcel from the post office today, yarn… I belong to the Luxury and Mystery Clubs from Nurturing Fibres and look what arrived! Amongst the blue yarns in the top photo is Yak. I have no idea what I’m going to knit with it but I love that it’s here.

Jen is in the middle of her grade 10 exams, it’s a very stressful time, she wrote English Paper 1 today and enjoyed it. If anyone is homeschooling their children through high-school, I would love to hear about the curriculum’s you are using and and how it’s going, even if you are finished homeschooling, I would love to hear about your experience. Our children write a grade 12 matric exam here in South Africa at the end of their school career and there’s a lot of work to cover, it’s all feeling daunting and scary right now…

Thank goodness my flu is almost gone but Cady and Kye are still a little under the weather.

Recovery Blanket Complete

Thank you so much for your lovely messages yesterday, I really appreciate it. I woke up at 4am feeling awful, Richard got up and made me tea and gave me some remedies to try and help me feel better. He’s so sweet, I’m grateful for him every day he’s so kind and thoughtful. I felt much better when it was time to get up. Kye had come through to our room early this morning with a blocked nose and sore eyes, he also woke up feeling a little better. This flu has been relentless in its quest for domination and I don’t have much time for it. I’ve just made a pot of chicken and ginger soup for lunch, I’m sure this recipe from Nourishing Traditions will work its magic and have us all feeling right as rain in no time. I love this book, it’s filled with wonderful recipes and information for healthy eating and well-being.

I finished sewing up the Recovery Blanket this morning and sewing in all the ends. This blanket has been such a lovely healing journey for all of us. I gave it to my mom and she is so pleased with it. We are all very grateful to everyone who sent pieces for this very special project. I’ll be making a second blanket as there are still so many pieces remaining, so my mom will have two:)

My mom has been staying with us since my dad passed away in August last year, she has just bought herself a lovely apartment in a retirement village just around the corner and is ready to slowly move forward with her life. It will be so strange without her here but she seems quite excited to become a part of this new community and I’m happy for her. We will all be helping with the big move next week and Caiden is so excited to have sleep-overs at Granny’s new home.

Happy Yarn Along.

Caiden has been learning about fibre in school and just out of the blue yesterday he asked me if he could try my drum carder. He wanted to see what it was like, I forgot all about our conversation yesterday but this morning, he took it down from the high shelf and started cleaning it up. He wanted some fibre and after a little explaining from me, he began carding some different coloured fleeces into a very pretty roving. He was thrilled with the outcome and then proceeded to ask me if I could teach him how to spin! Of course I said YES! My 11 year son wants to learn to spin, how wonderful! I did explain that it takes patience and persevation whilst learning spinning and he said he was still very keen.

Jen has been feeling so much better this week, so we’re holding thumbs that the headaches don’t return. She is working very hard at the moment, Maths paper 1 is on Friday and then she writes everyday next week. Richard was able to recover some of his Sani video files, I am so happy for him that he was able to do this.

Other than that, I have the flu, I haven’t been sick for ages and now I quite flat, I’ve been drinking copious amounts of honey, lemon, honey and Rooibos tea, it really does have such a comforting effect… I am revisiting the Cotswold Cowl knitting pattern again and would like to hold a test knit for that soon, thanks for reminding me about this pattern Joanne:) I will keep everyone updated here.

Hope your week is wonderful so far.
