Haarties Cableway13

A few days ago we went on a short day-trip to Hartbeespoort to go up the Harties Cableway. It was so impressive and had state of the art equipment imported from Switzerland (this tiny snippet of information made me feel very happy indeed, Swiss equipment is good, I just kept telling myself this the whole time… I’m afraid of heights, just in case you were wondering…) My nerves were finished by the time I got to the top but I’m so glad I went up, the scenery was superb and it was a wonderful experience to share with our family.

Cooking Outside with a “Hay Box”

Hay Box

Hay Box1

Jen, Caiden and Erin cooked dinner outside today, the exciting part was that Jen showed us how to use a “Hay Box” to cook the rice. She learnt about it at scouts on one of her camps. All you need is a box, a black box would be better as it attracts and traps heat from the sun but we worked with what we had and it worked just fine. A good time to start would be when the sun is high in the sky, midday.

Line the base of the box with a thick blanket, then add newspaper so that it will surround and cover the pot once it’s placed in the box and then another blanket is placed on top of the newspaper which is covering and surrounding the pot.

First boil the water in a pot on the stove, once the water is boiling, add rice and take your boiling pot outside and place it inside the newspaper in the hay box. Really surround the pot with plenty of newspaper and do it quickly so that not too much heat is lost. Then cover everything with a thick blanket so that it’s nice and snug.

Close the lid tight and leave the box in direct sunlight. On a hot day, it should  cook within a few hours. Check on the rice once or twice, not too often, as the heat will escape.

Jen and Kye repositioning the box into direct sunlight later this afternoon.

Cooked Rice

When she opened the box after approx 3 hours, there was plenty of condensation, heat and the rice was cooked.

Juice

Green Juice

Last night Jen, Erin and Caiden went on an all-night scout hike. They had an amazing time, walking 15 km around our neighbourhood and stopping at various bases to perform practical tasks along the way.  It was freezing out there so they dressed for the occasion, scarves, hats, thick jackets and gloves and had so much fun! Johannesburg usually isn’t this icy during winter but a cold snap began suddenly last week and hasn’t lifted yet, perhaps we’ll have snow! Just imagine!! They eventually finished at around 3am and stayed over at the scout hall.

Richard fetched them early at 7:30, they collapsed into bed, Jenna said it was so cold but the most fun she has ever had and would do it again! My mom looked after everyone this morning so Richard and I could spend some time together. We walked down the road to the bird sanctuary to see the flamingos and found another sweet character there too, a lovely young feral cat was sunning herself on a log. I went quite close to her and she watched me intently but still continued to sit in the sun. This entire area is fenced off but there are hills outside for people to take photos of the bird-life over the top of the fence. I even took a video with my camera to add to this post but alas WordPress wound’t allow me to upload it, the file size was too big. Richard and I had a lovely morning together.

We have also started juicing again, I need to plant my wheat-grass seeds this weekend but for now we are having a green juice everyday. I tend to forget how important this is but now I am dedicated especially because it’s winter and the flu that’s going around is quite severe.

Today’s juice:

Apple, ginger, oranges, celery, spinach, carrots, cucumber and banana all sent through our Oscar juicer. Such a wonderful machine, we’ve had it for a few years now and it works perfectly and is easy to clean too, which is a big plus.

Have a lovely Saturday:)

All Our “Problems” are small in Comparison…

Working

Kye busy doing his maths school work this morning by the fire. The sweet pencil wrap is from Ziezo Designs, he loves it.

Hair

Jen has been practising different braids on our hair, this one on my hair we found here off of Pinterest.

Erin Plait

She plaited a sideways braid on Erin’s hair, her friend showed her how to do this one.

Sharpie Pens on Ceramics

Sharpie Mug

We also found this clever idea on Pinterest, how to draw on ceramic mugs with Sharpie pens, the mug is baking in the oven now, I’ll let you know how it comes out… I think this is such a lovely idea, the possibilities are endless…

Chicken Soup

I made some of our favourite chicken and ginger soup from Nourishing Traditions for lunch today. Caiden and Kye kept asking for more, I’m so happy the boys are starting to enjoy soups this winter…

Potatoes

Potatoes are sprouting in the kitchen window-box.

Sunny Days Shawlette6

I’ve just blocked my mom’s Sunny Days Shawlette, such a pretty pattern, looks really lovely:)

Going back to the title of this post, a friend has just discovered that her 21 year old son has cancer, he had it when he was 16 and it has returned, situated in his chest this time, a huge tumour… I can’t even begin to imagine what it must be like to have to endure this, watching your loved-one suffer… When I think about this young man and what he, as well as his family is going through, whatever I thought was urgent or seemed to be a ‘problem’ in our life, REALLY isn’t at all, we are so fortunate to have our health… I am praying for him and his family, please could you also…
