Knitting, Chickens and Green…

I have really been enjoying knitting on my Color Affection shawl, it’s almost finished and so exceptionally soft! I wasn’t sure about knitting with brushed kid mohair but I’m very happy I did. The feel is comforting and cozy, exactly what I want in a shawl. The size is also wonderful, I knitted the larger shawl because I wanted it to really wrap around me for when I go on walks and then I can just unwrap it as I need to. I am busy with the solid edge at the moment and have about half an inch to go and then it will be finished!

These photos above are of the view from my bedroom windows, I have three large bedroom windows looking out onto our back garden. The first photo is of a sparrow nest, this nest is about 2.5 metres away from my window, I am so excited Mr and Mrs Sparrow decided that this was the right spot to raise a family. We will be able to witness their journey, how precious!

The green photos (I LOVE green) have been taken from the two other windows… I love all the green variegation on the leaves of the ivy and lawn with just a tiny sliver of brown sand…

Our chickens…

Each morning our sweet girls make their way to this spot at the front door and call raucously until we appear and give them a few snacks. They are very inquisitive, forever trying to climb through open windows and see what the humans are up to:)

WIP Wednesday and Yarn Along

I am still busy with my Color Affection Shawl and I am really enjoying the knitting process. I just love how the pattern is divided up into various sections and how the second section joins the first piece at an almost 45 degree angle. It’s exciting! The colours are a motivating aspect too,  variegated yarns are wonderful this way, the colours continue to develop and grow and then suddenly change and morph into something else altogether…

I am knitting in these three colours, the variegated ball is a camel silk handspun and the other two are commercially spun kid mohair. Oh this shawl is so warm as I knit with it on my lap, I can’t wait to feel it draped over my shoulders on a chilly day…

You can see how the second colour section joins the first at the perfect angle.

I have finished the first of the slippers for the slipper pattern I am designing, it is a cozy fit:)

I am reading the A Knitter’s Home Companion, I adore this book! I take it with me everywhere, out in the car etc… It’s full of stories , recipes and patterns, a delightful publication. I think I saw it on your blog Tracey, thank you so much for letting me know about this wonderful book, you always have such beautiful book suggestions:)

Knitting and more Knitting, I Love it So!

Just thought I would share a photo of the Recovery Blanket so far. It’s vibrant and very pretty, my mom,  my sister, my niece, my daughters and I  have mixed the heart pattern with the vintage diamond pattern. You can read more about the Recovery Blanket here. I love all the colours, we have started adding variegated pieces too. As soon as more pieces arrive from all over, we will add them in amongst the others.

It’s so exciting, the knitted pieces from overseas and SA have started to arrive! I need to go and fetch more from the post office. I am so grateful to everyone who sent and are still knitting and sending squares for this special blanket, thank you! There squares above are from Carle’, Sally, Emma, Melainey and Rene’, you are so wonderful and thank you for the extra little goodies you sent as well, I am truly blessed to know you all xo

My Color Affection Shawl is growing in size, I love the softness of this merino and alpaca hand-spun below mixed with the soft green of the brushed kid mohair, I can’t wait to wear it soon.

Some other exciting news is that my animal knitting patterns have been featured in the Ideas Magazine, it is available here locally in South Africa, overseas and digitally on i-Pad. I have found a lovely digitial news stand where I can download magazines to read on my i-Pad, it’s called Zinio. I’m so happy about this because now I can store them in my i-Pad library and not accumulate magazines all around our home.

Knitting the Color Affection Shawl…

I have been wanting to knit something special ever since I finished my Circumnavigate Cowl and when I saw my friend Rene’s Color Affection Shawl on her Facebook page, I knew this was the project I had been waiting for. I love this shawl because it is a larger than other shawls, an item you can wrap right around yourself and keep warm while going for late afternoon walks (something my mom and I have started doing).

I wanted it to be a luxurious shawl so I scratched through my hand spun stash until I found what I was looking for, an alpaca and merino single spun skein, I bought the roving from here. It is a little bright, but I really think it will knit up into a lovely item. I am alternating the alpaca merino yarn with a solid but slightly variegated kid mohair green (softness….). I love this green, it reminds me of algae, a real pond green, is juxtaposes beautifully next to the purples and teals of the hand spun…

I am busy with my second section of colour repeats and I literally can’t put it down!

Our Wisteria is in full bloom down the one side of our home where our bedrooms are. The scent is absolutely wonderful and the business of the bees and bumble bees is lovely to watch as they continually visit each flower…

Wishing you all a lovely week…

PS Thank you so much for all your birthday wishes last Friday, I had the best birthday weekend ever! (I definitely do believe that 40th birthdays should last the entire weekend, don’t you?)  I received amazing gifts, spent time with family and friends and went to dinner with old friends on Saturday night, it was just superb!
