I loved receiving this parcel! The front gate bell rang, in drove the courier and handed me a box, I opened it and oh my goodness, the joy!!! It was so beautifully wrapped and I just can’t help lifting the lid to look at it each time I walk into the study. The box is on the table, where I think it will stay for a few days and then, I will knit! Ahhh, this Manos del Uruguay yarn is JUST divine, I bought it from here.

Oh my goodness!! I would squeal but my kids are asleep still in the other room. Those are absolutely beautiful!!
I knitted a baby sweater from some of this yarn, and the sweater is ADORABLE, but then someone told me I shouldn’t let a baby wear it because it was extrafine merino wool! Is that true? The sweater just seems warm and durable because of the thickness of the yarn.
Hi Lyssa
I have not heard of babies not wearing / being exposed to extra fine merino wool so I did some online research. The conclusion of many web searches (allergies, hypersensitivity, dangers of fibres to babies/children etc) is that because it is so gentle on the skin, super fine merino is particularly great and widely used for baby and childrenโs blankets and garments! (One website said it is the best wool other than cashmere!) It seems that some people with hypersensitivity to wool find really fine merino (the finer the better) to be very comfortable to wear!
I did not find any evidence to suggest that babies in general must avoid extra fine merino wool.
Some people are allergic to lanolin which would prevent them from wearing wool at all & also cause reactions to products containing lanolin. (Cosmetics containing lanolin may only cause allergies if the lanolin contains pesticides & so it is advised to only use lanolin containing products that state that they are pesticide-free.)
Please email me if you find out the reason for the person advising you differently. I would be very interested to know what the reasons are!
Thank you SO much! I let my baby wear the sweater a few times before I had heard that, and nothing negative seemed to happen. My new-mom-nerves got freaked out thinking that the merino wool sweater might be bad for her skin or something. But she’s wearing it again right now, thanks to your information! I really appreciate you alleviating my fears. I definitely didn’t want to waste the gorgeous yarn and the lovely sweater! Thank you!!!
