Sponsor Giveaway from Super Skivvies

Today I would like to introduce you to the lovely Steph of Super Skivvies

This is her story…

Linda: How did your business come to be?

Super Skivvies was conceived by accident! Originally, I was sewing decorated bamboo velour and bamboo fleece prefolds, and knitting and crocheting wool longies (pants) and diaper covers. The prefold diaper market where I was selling was over saturated, and knitting for other people was not my cup of tea, no matter how much I was being paid. I had a friend ask for someone to make her daughter potty training pants for overnight, and I, wanting to try something new, jumped all over the opportunity. I’m insanely frugal, so I wanted to somehow figure out a way to make them last beyond potty training, and this is where I had the idea to make them convertible. My friend loved them, so I tried selling them in my shop…they were a HUGE hit! I left the prefold and wool diaper cover business in the dust and never looked back!

Linda: What is your inspiration?

My daughter. I want to show my daughter what a good work ethic looks like, both for money and work in the home, and that she doesn’t have to work a 9-5 in a cubicle if she doesn’t want to. My line of work and this business gives me the opportunity to stay home with her and to teach her how to be a creative, free thinking, contributing member of society.

Linda: Tell us about the materials that you use.

Sustainability and avoidance of toxic chemicals is a priority for me. Super Skivvies are made of cotton (sometimes organic or Oeko-Tex certified), and bamboo (naturally organic).  I chose bamboo over several other absorbent materials for the following reasons:

  • Rapid growing crop grown without the use of pesticides or fertilizers.
  • Produced in a “closed loop system” that re-circulates and captures agents used to convert the plant into fiber.
  • Biodegradable
  • Anti-microbial
  • Breathable
  • Moisture wicking
  • Hypo-allergenic
  • 300% more absorbent than cotton
  • Anti-static

Linda: Tell us about any exciting products that you are adding to your range.

We actually just launched our new boxer brief style of Super Skivvies! They are SO cute and double up as bloomers for the girls. In 2013, I hope to add a line of panties/underwear and hopefully dip my toes in the overnight/bed wetting area of absorbent pants.

Linda: How you balance family and work?

I think all of us are continually trying to figure out how to balance the two! As Super Skivvies grows, our family life seems to keep right up. I have had a huge amount of growth over the last two years, and thankfully, my daughter has entered “school age” during that time. She attends a local Waldorf school then comes home and naps for a couple of hours, and I use that time to get most of my work done. It is also common for me to be at the computer or filling orders after she has gone to bed. I try to avoid working from after nap until bedtime so that I am fully available to her.

Linda: What you do to recharge?

Every other Friday, I go to a women’s only naked spa with my friend. I also barely lift a finger on Sunday’s! I’m the type of person who is always “go-go-go!” so it doesn’t take much for me to feel like I have more to give again.

Intriguing…. I’m doing just about everything under the sun to get my 2 year old (well 2 and 4 months) interested in wearing panties full time. She likes the feel of them but resists having to stop her play and go potty. We call her “Busy Lizzy” for a reason. Maybe if she had some of these beauties it might inspire her…
