Knitting Archive Ramblings…

Thanks to everyone who commented about Black and White Wednesday Photography Challenge yesterday. More and more people join in each week and your photos are amazing. I am so looking forward to next week:) I thought I would write a post today about my knitting archives from when I was young. I used to knit jerseys and cardigans. I haven’t done this for quite some time, and I do believe it is time to start again. This jersey I am wearing here was knitted by me almost 20 years ago! Wow, the years have flown by. When I knitted this I was 18 years old, still living at home, and had all the time in the world to do whatever inspired me:) My mom used to knit all the time and I really enjoyed knitting along with her. I found this jersey in my cupboard this morning and I thought I would wear it today. It is so warm and I am sure has Mohair in it. I really wish I could find the pattern, I do remember it was a Sirdar pattern though. I am very happy it still fits me and is so soft after all this time.

Time has gone by so fast since I knitted this jersey. Here is Kye, he was quite sure he wanted to be in this photo. Since I have knitted this, I have married my wonderful husband, had 4 beautiful children, home birthed, breastfed them all and gone on many wonderful journeys and learned so much. I also love this space here, on my blog, where I record our life and I can speak my mind and know there are amazing mamas that stop by here and leave their wisdom, thoughts and support. Thanks Sistahs…

What a treasure, and it still fits! I wish the things I made at 18 still fit and were NOT made of acrylic (the only LYS in my hometown sold ONLY acrylic…sigh)…
Would I trade the homebirthing, breastfeeding travelling, and mothering I’ve done since I was 18? Never!
    Great post!

Such a pretty sweater! The beauty of hand knits, is that they really do carry a lot of memories with them. Everything I’ve ever knit brings back memories of the time in my life when I was working on it.

Linda, the jumper is beautiful. I knitted something very similar about 30 years ago when I was 18 and first left home. Its probably not the same pattern but it is close. I lost it along with a whole bagful of my hand knit jumpers during one of our house moves years ago.

You have always been a talent! (and you make people too!)I still have the first cardigan i ever knitted at about the same age, maybe a wee bit older – it is not nearly so fine a work tho – chunky mohair on big fat needles, it still fits too – mind you i knitted it so big it can fit me and both my girls in it at the same time! LOL

Beautiful sweater – I wish I could pull things like that out of MY cupboard!

I love the back of your sweater! I think it is fabulous when something you made twenty years ago is something that you can still use and wear. Homemade is the best!

Your sweater is beautiful as is your sweet boy. Thank you for sharing.

Oh-oh. Just left a long comment here – and went on to the next post, only to find that it had lost track of my ID. DId my long comment make it to moderation, I wonder? Dang.

When I was just a little older than 18, at the end of my undergrad studies, I made a fancy vest for a male friend, then started one for myself – a small green thing with an argyle stripe across the chest (my own crazy design). But I never finished it. It sat for over thirty years in a storage box in the loft of our garage along with the toys and camping gear and old furniture.

Then one summer night, a nasty sort of person found his way into that garage and went through it as though he were shopping – he stole expensive sleeping bags and some tools. I had to find something in there only a day later, got to the top of the stairs and had the creepiest feeling that something wasn’t right. Then saw that things were missing.

The police found the stash of things (to make a long story short), and among them was that half vest. Why he took a thing that wouldn’t have fit around his leg, even, I still have no idea. But I have it back again – with a story to tell.

Since that vest was made, I too married and bore four kiddos. And I nursed them – eight years or so of nursing – a good percentage of my life (I could use doing it again to get some of this middle aged fat off the middle of me). And home educated the lot of them through their junior high years – really, the math and language arts throughout their entire growing up. Now I admire their lives – and enjoy those deep relationships we built over those years.

Sistahs, yes. How wonderful. Does it seem that there is a pattern here? Women who weave life by hand, loving family and treasuring the things that last? We make our lives like lovely jerseys – they will keep us warm and comfortable through all the winters of our lives. And always fit.

    A very good pattern indeed.
