Knitting Sheep, The Pattern Thought Process…

I have been working on a new sheep pattern, I love the process… thinking a pattern into a form…
I study photos of the animals I am designing, look at their shape, imagine their movement in my mind and think about how that would affect their musculature and overall appearance. Then, I look to their jaw line, how it tapers and how it balances with the curve of their neck and back…

So today it was the sheep, I drew him, noticing how his neck and head extend outwards as if he is reaching forward to grasp something. His face also tapers very slightly downwards and upwards as if converging to a central point of meeting, at the muzzle or snout. The back legs are quite muscular compared to the front legs and the tummy section is quite a bulk of form. Even the little ears I have noticed after looking at many photos of sheep, actually stand a little out to the sides of his head and don’t hang straight down…

This is how I like to look at an animal before I design a pattern, once I have an understanding of their shapely detail I can imagine the stitches and convert them to the written pattern instructions:)

Taking photos today was quite an interesting process, the chickens were intent on coming over to have a closer look at what I was doing…

The sheep…

He will be going into my shop his pattern is already listed:) I have also added him to Ravelry, I am there as Mamma4earth.

Valentine Knitted Cupid Bow and Arrow…

I wanted to share our latest Valentine’s craft, Cupid’s Bow and Arrow. It is really a simple little project, I love simple:) It is knitted in an I-cord… I was thinking of attaching this to a card and sewing on the word LOVE at the top of the card with straight stitches in a red cursive font. I would stick the bow and arrow to the card with craft glue or fabric glue. Otherwise they could be attached to napkin rings for a Valentine’s dinner OR even a hanging ornament if some thread was attached, or a broach, ok I will stop now:)…

Materials:
Thin wire
Red yarn
2 double pointed needles for knitting an I-cord
Sewing up needle for ends
Red felt for your heart
Scissors
Craft glue
Red cotton thread and sewing needle

Cast on 3 stitches and knit two I-cords one – 3 inches long and one – 4.5 inches long.

Cut your wire to the same length as your I-cords and push into your I-cord, this can be a little tricky, so if it really refuses to push through, just wind your wire through the sittches of one side of our I-cord.

Sew in your ends and around the ends, bend your bow and attach some red yarn that will hold your bow in position.

I cut out a small red felt heart and sewed it onto the end of my arrow instead of a point. Sew your arrow to the bow.

And there you have it, Cupid’s bow and arrow…
Enjoy xo xo

WIP Wednesday… The Milo Vest…

I have been knitting on this Milo vest, off of Ravelry, for Kye since the weekend… I love it. It is knitted completely in the round and just look at the clever neck and shoulder straps, no seaming… how wonderful!! There are so many other things I should be doing right now, but I just can’t resist the temptation to knit on this project, I am sure I am not alone in thinking this, am I? Knitting is so much more fun than… unpacking the dishwasher… isn’t it? Oh I definately think so:) I just have a few more rows to go and then I think I will cast on for another in a different colourway. I am knitting this vest in Colourspun DK Cotton. I also love the very subtle cable that runs down the one side… too sweet…
