Day Trip to Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve

Today we went on a day trip to the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, it took us about 45 minutes to get there. We drove around the reserve seeing lovely game, stopped and had a picnic and then went on a 4.5 km hike up one of the hills. It has been an amazing day, I think I need to go for a nap, but it was well worth it:) The countryside here in South Africa is so dry at the moment and we could see that there had been a huge veld fire a few weeks ago but the green shoots of grass have already started to push through the ground…
Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend, here are some postcards from our day trip out….

Yes, do you see this steeeeeeep hill? We we walked up this hill today, towards the top, I really thought I was going to need oxygen (hee, hee) but I made it!! And then it was downhill the rest of the way, but so worth it:)

What an amazing world we have. The postcards you have sent – and the ones I will post later today – cannot capture the majesty and the wide vistas of sky and plain and rolling mountains or hills – a tiny slice of this just can’t give the whole breathtaking size and smell of a place like this. If I use my imagination, though, I can feel the heat, and the wind against my face.

But you live in a place where the wild horses are striped, and there are all kinds of shapes and sizes and colors of four footed things. Our animals are mostly brown – and not much decorated. So we have to find delight in the tiny details.

I love bridges and drives like this. And the sense of wonder, driving along, sure of being surprised around the next corner. The closest I will ever get to this, I am afraid, is the safari ride at Disneyworld. There, you may have a giraffe stick his head into the vehicle, or find yourself stuck in a curious, slow-drifting cloud of flamingos. And all the scary things are behind fences that are disguised as tall heaps and lines of mud thrown up by heavy tires, or creeks and hedges.

that was a long hike to go uphill. Proud of you. Of course, Mr. Bike Rider probably took it in stride. And children – if I had a tenth of that energy, I wonder how much I could accomplish in a day – or would I simply run in circles faster?

I love it when you send postcards. I love looking at your part of the planet. How strange that you are on the other side of it, though – I prefer the world-is-flat concept.

OMGosh! I spent my childhood hiking at Suikerbosrand!!!even slept over a few times in their huts. I have to admit my Mom had to pack extra snacks as we did moan from time to time 😛 We once came across a troop of baboons and had to turn around, another time my brother wandered into the middle of a heard of wildebeest and my dad had to try and whisper/tiptoe to get him out 😀 oh such fun times.
Thank you so much for the trip down memory lane xxxxx

Hmmm… your game reserve sure looks nothing like the one’s around here! 🙂

Ours house elk, deer, porcupines, badgers, otters, owls, eagles, hawks, cougars, lynx…

What a diverse world we live in!

    Blessings, Debbie

It”s stunningly beautiful landscape. I grew up in Northern Canada where the animals were a little different, but I loved being able to walk out and see them too. Thanks for posting the photos. Maybe one day I will make it over there to see it for myself.
