Grade 3 Native American Block


Erin has just started her Native American block and we have begun with the Woodland people who lived in longhouses. She is enjoying this so much and I have discovered some lovely books written by Bonnie Shemie that are beautiful accounts of the dwelling places of different peoples. They are lovely to read.

In this photo we have made a fire and we are cooking stick bread. It is really tasty and easy to make. Just take some flour, water, salt to taste and butter. Mix this all together until you have a nice dough.

Find a long stick, sosatie sticks work well, and shape your dough around the end of the stick like the dough in the photo. Make sure it is not too thick on the stick or it will take too long to cook. Hold your dough on a stick just above the flame and it will cook nicely. Try not to let your stick go into the flame of it wiil burn and so will your dough. Check after a while and you will have lovely bread. It tastes delicious. Please be careful of the flames, I’m sure you will be.

This was a lovely activity for our Native American block if anyone has any other suggestions for activitites, I would love to hear them.

Mulberry Picking

Our fruit is slowly ripening in our garden, we have nectarines, peaches, plums, lemons, pomegranates, granadillas, prunes and a grape vine, that we made wine from last March. Our wine is finally ready and tastes delicious.

This is our mulberry tree that is just laden with fruit and everyone is taking a turn on the ladder picking mulberries. Fun, fun, fun….

Lemon Cordial Recipe

We have five lemon trees in our garden and they are all full of lemons at this time of year, so Jen and I decided to make Lemon Cordial with our bounty of lemons. This is a recipe from granny and it is lovely.

Ingredients:

3 lemons

2 teaspoons of citric acid

900 grams of sugar

a large bunch of mint

750 ml boiling water

Grate all the skins off the lemons and place them in a bowl, then squeeze the juice from the lemons over the skins. Add all the other ingredients, pour the boiling water into the bowl and stir until the sugar has disolved, crushing the mint at the same time.

Let this mixture cool down and then strain and bottle when cool. It can be stored in the fridge.

Because this is a cordial, you only need to pour a tiny amount in a glass and fill the rest of the glass with filtered water. This is such a refreshing drink, enjoy!

Needle Felting

Yesterday I decided it was time for me to try needle felting. Well I did and I love it, I have only made a flower so far but it was very satisfying indeed.
The children saw me busy with all of this fleece and sponge and needles and asked if they could also try, so quite a few flowers were made (precious). So now we have a new aspect to our handwork, we will all be needle felting too.
We have decided to needle felt a Spring Mobile for our work area hanging from some natural branches, I think this will look lovely. I have two needle felting books that I would like to mention: Magic Wool and More Magic Wool.
