Woodwork with Caiden, my Dear Son…

This is my dear son Caiden, the sweetest boy:) He has just started a 3 week practical woodworking block. This is so exciting and I will be learning so much as well. Yesterday we started our first woodwork project, a wooden toolbox! It was such fun. First Cady marked out all the measurements for all the pieces of wood, which is important work for his maths as well!
He cut out quite a lot of the wood with a hand saw and then we used the scroll saw to cut the rest. We followed the instructions in our wonderful carpentry book, Woodworking for Kids a fantastic book with so many amazing projects. I was continuously amazed at how conscientious he was, taking his time to saw and glue the pieces together, really enjoying the process. (Only mom cut with the electrical saw!)
Then came the glueing and hammering part, we lined up all the pieces, glued each one and Caiden hammered in all the nails, he loved this! He was so alive and active in the moment, it was like it awakened a part of his soul, tremendous to watch…
And there we go, his finished woodwork toolbox! I am so very proud of him and he is so very proud of himself for finishing this project:) Now he has a place to pack all his carpentry tools.

I have been busy with Easter knitting for my shop and this is my latest creation, he is called Fred, the Easter Rabbit and he is knitted with pure Angora yarn that I handspun myself. I will only be stocking a small amount of these as I have knitted up all the Angora that I have spun:) He is exceptionally soft! I will be listing him in a few hours.

Shop Talk: Discounts 🙂
I do accept Paypal, but I am discounting orders that are paid with Monster Pay:) The banking fees are lower for me and I can receive payment faster with Monster Pay as I live in South Africa and therefore I am offering a discount to customers that will pay this way. All I do is email you an invoice and you click on the links to pay. Monster Pay is very similar to Paypal and so easy to use, I promise:) If you would like to pay with Monster Pay and receive a nice discount and pay exact shipping, just send me a conversation on Etsy and I will create a special listing for you at a reduced amount:) Otherwise, please feel free to continue to use Paypal:)

Happy Monday everyone:)
Warmly
Linda

I love the look of concentration on Caden’s face as he works through that project. I think part of the problem with the world is that children do not get enough chance to do real things, work real problems, do real work. Once Caden has made something with his hands, and can use it – the world opens up to him, as does his concept of his own personal power to act and create and organize. You are doing so well.

I’m so impressed with Caden’s toolbox! May I ask how old he is? I think my son is still a little young for this type of work, but I look forward to learning with him when he gets older.

I too enjoyed looking at Caiden’s expressions as he worked on his workbox. That look of serious absorption is wonderful to see. He is learning and he is feeling capable and strong. That’s a wonderful way for a child (or anyone!) to feel! love, Beth

What a joy it was to see Caiden – working with wood and using his hands – and good for you Mama for helping make a tool box. I look forward to making one with my daughters…we worked with some wood this weekend too – maybe in tomorrow’s post…love your bunny.

Wow, how awesome to have such crafty kids Linda. Caiden’s toolbox is just perfect, and I love that you get to knit with your girls! Thanks so much for the lovely comment on my most recent post. I am loving doing Project Life. It is a kit that was put together by Becky Higgins (you can see it on her blog), and the idea is to take one photo every day of the year. The kit comes with slotted page dividers where you slot your photos and comes with journaling tags etc. Hope you are keeping well. I have had to go back to work (still also doing the swimming lessons until mid March) so life is really hectic at the moment. Caide has 3 swimming galas this week, as well as 2 tests and an oral. Must say I am feeling a touch overwhelmed! Needless to say my hobbies are not getting as much time as I would like (I always feel they are what keep me sane!!) I haven’t spun in over a month (it’s also too hot to spin!). Sorry about the moaning and groaning. Keep well my friend!

He looks like a professional. What a great tool box. Isn’t woodworking fun? I had never done it before my son took to the tools. And Fred, who couldn’t resist him. Very cute. Hope all is well on your side of the world. Be well.
