African Skies…

Dear Friends,
Thank you all so much for being such caring, wonderful people! You have all been so supportive. To all of you who phoned, emailed and commented on my blog about my dad, I feel very blessed and honoured to know you all. My father is home now from hospital and is recovering slowly. We are all very relieved and so grateful that he is growing stronger each day:)
This last weekend we went to stay at our friend’s lovely farm in Belfast, Mpumalanga. It is a spectacular farm, totally off the grid. All the water comes from a natural spring and the power is solar…lovely!

My love sitting by one of the trout dams…
The road up to the farm…
You can see the solar panels on the side of the farmhouse…
The farmhouse…
I just love these African skies…
Blesbok on the farm, they also have Zebra, Aardvarks, Wildebeest, Springbok etc…
We hiked up this very steep hill to the top, it was amazing!
Playing in the creek of the trout dams…
What an awesome experience, there are so many rocks on the farm that show mechanical weathering erosion, so our visit was an educational one too:)
Wishing you all a wonderful week:)

Day Trip to Suikerbosrand…

Yesterday we spent a lovely day in immersed in nature… We went mountain biking in a nature reserve called Suikerbosrand… It is such a beautiful place and we will definately be returning there soon. We loaded up our mountain bikes and reached our destination within about 45 minutes, really close by…  I haven’t visited for quite a few years, I used to go hiking there when I was much younger… Now they have biking trails, a meditation hut, safari drives, a bird sanctuary AND a Butterfly Reserve… Jenna, Erin and Caiden in the photo above so enjoyed this beautiful environment…
Here we are hiking across the veld (long grass) to a welcoming shady tree, where we all sat down to a picnic lunch. This beautiful tree is called a Cabbage Tree / Highveld Protea (Cussonia paniculata). They have been given this name because their leaves and texture are a similar to that of cabbage leaf. The people who lived in this area many years before used to carve drinking vessels and wooden figures from the wood from this tree.
Jenna sitting under the Cabbage tree before we set off on our bikes again…
These are the Museum houses at Suikerbosrand… This area was a Pioneer farm that was owned by Jan Gabriel Marais and his wife around the year 1845… I love history…
I had to photograph this, it was an entire flock of sparrows sitting on the power lines together, just watching us riding by…
Here is a lovely find, the yellow markings on this rock is Lichen, they are primitave plants that are flat and small. They are so beautiful…
Richard has a special seat for Kye, that our friend made that fits onto the cross bar of his bike. It is just like a bicycle seat and attached to it are footrests. This is attached firmly to Richard’s bike. Kye enjoys long rides with dad…
The view was spectacular… have a wonderful New Years Day…

Wonderful Days…

The last few days have been wonderful family filled days… The children have been spending plenty of time in the pool swimming… We shared a candle lit Summer Solstice supper with friends… Many lovely hours of Christmas day preparations… And enjoying Christmas Day together with family…. I also managed to fit in processing all my newly harvested peaches into chutney. I have frozen quite a few bottles of it and the rest I have gifted to family… Tomorrow is my dad’s 81st birthday and we will be celebrating with him…
Wishing you all precious holidays together…

Cherry Picking Festival…

We have just returned from a Cherry Picking Festival near a beautiful town called Clarens. On the trip to the festival we passed the most amazing rock structures and Limestone caves. The cherry picking was lovely and we listened to a talk by the farmer, telling us all about his cherry orchards and then we could walk between the trees and pick as many as we could eat…
Can you spot the fairy in the tree? She discovered a beautiful glade just outside the orchard….
