A Day Full of Surprises!!

I took this photo with my phone on the way to buy chicken food today, just loved the starkness of the tree against the sky.

Today has been the most exciting day ever!! We had snow!!! Not a lot, but we had snow!!!

We have been hoping for snow since the last time we had it in 2007 and here it is. It has been snowing on and off for most of the day. The kids are beyond excited and so am I!

This is the new fence we have been building to keep our chickens to one side of the garden.

Later the sun came out, so we went out into the back garden, Sandy started chasing something and we ran to see what it was. It ran and jumped into our swimming pool. It was a young Moorhen. She was so beautiful, such vibrant colours and the most amazing green and yellow legs and feet.

We quickly drove down to the pan and released her there with all the other Moorhens, I am so happy she escaped Sandy and we were able to return her to her home!

Aaaah and then to make my day even more perfect, a parcel arrived from dear Lori, such a wonderful gift, her photo book from her travels to Namibia! Every photo is beautiful and precious. I will treasure this special gift always!

PS If you haven’t yet entered the giveaway from Jeni, The Blog Maven for a beautiful Custom Blog Header worth $150, go here.

Have a great day, I am off to play in the snow!!

I’m happy if you’re happy about the snow lol Living in WV, USA, we get a lot of snow Dec into March (sometimes even a snow in April…) But *I guess* if we hadn’t had any since2007, I’d be excited too. On the other hand, that bird is beautiful!

Enjoyed seeing all your photos–I would be excitied about snow, too. How far had the moor hen traveled? Is it a waterfowl?

Hi Jezz, the Moorhen had only travelled about half a kilometer up the road to our house. She was so sweet:)

First thing this morning (in south of US), I saw my family in Joburg were posting snow pics on Facebook. I was so excited. Wish I could’ve been there to see that. And it actually looks like you got quite a bit of snow. Forecast for more I’m told? Enjoy!

What exotic looking feet and leg colors on the moorhen. Your snowball as big as a small car just made me smile. Thanks for sharing such fun pics.

oh my gosh! i didn’t know it snowed in joburg! (or nearby), that looks amazing and really so exciting. it is a thrill when it doesn’t happen very often. we dont’ get snow here at the beach, but only 20 minutes away up the foothills it can happen every once in awhile and we feel the same!

a moorhen! wow so exciting too, isn’t it a beautiful bird, such pretty legs and feet. your yard looks so welcoming no wonder it came for a visit!

and yay! i love it when mail arrives. so happy you enjoyed the wee book, it’s really small isn’t it? but perfect for little hands. thank you for the kind words linda. xox lori

      Hi Lori,

It hasn’t snowed here since 2007, we are so grateful for the snow.

The Moorhen was such a treat to find, we have never been so close to one before.

I love my parcel, you are such a wonderful friend, thank you!!

      Love to you

      Linda

Wow, that is so beautiful! We never ever get snow here in Durban, I have actually never seen snow. We could take a drive up to the midlands about an hour and a half from here, I hear its lovely up there too, but maybe next time.
Its just been raining and raining here, with a bit of hail. But I am not complaining as it was soooo dry and we were desperate for this wet weather.
That moorhen is amazing, you are very lucky to live so close to a pan.

That’s about how much snow we had last winter, strangely. I am delighted, seeing my own joy in the faces of the children. I was brought up in Los Angeles, a place where it NEVER snowed – where snow was a thing of magic and legend. Your snowman is a little more brown that I am used to – but then, we didn’t even HAVE one last years. And I think no snowman has ever been more loved than yours. The moor hen is lovely, and it is very Dawkins to have saved her and taken her home. If only all people were as filled with delight, mercy and the motivation to save as you guys are.
