A New Member of Our Family…

I just had to share this sweet little story with you… The other night, while we were sleeping, Jenna jumped out of bed and said she could hear a strange sound, we all jumped out of bed and couldn’t find out what was causing the noise and we did look all around the house. Eventually, we heard it, it was the loudest croak we had ever heard! BUT at the end of the croak, was a clucking sound like a chicken. We thought our chickens had escaped their coop and then we realised, it was a visiting toad! She makes the strangest sound, first a massive, and I mean massively loud croak and then clucks just like a chicken…. She is so sweet and she has been named Matilda. She is living in our fishpond just outside our lounge window. Every night without fail she croaks away.

We have a large beautiful lake down the road from us and we think she might have travelled up from there. We have done a little research on Matilda and it seems that only the males make toad calls to attract the females, so I think we will have to think up a new name for her, um I mean, him 🙂 We think, he is called a Raucous Toad when we compare the croaking sound he makes to the description in the nature guide. The guide says they make duck-like quacks and he definately does. I really have never heard anything like it.

We feel so honoured that this little creature has chosen our humble pond to make his new home…

Thanks for stopping by…

I like your new friend! It sounds so nice, living near a lake and hearing frogs croaking outside. When I was a kid there tons of frogs and toads in our neighborhood, but these days they are rare.

I just love reading your blog. I do wish we could do the lantern thing, but my teenagers would expire without their computer/etc.
In the summer we are over-run with desert toads. They hibernate all winter underground, and come out in monsoon season. They are HUGE and incredibly loud, and also poisonous – cannot let the dogs near them. If the dogs lick one, they will hallucinate, and possibly die. Crazy!
PS I adore the knitted giraffe in your shop.
