Jenna’s Fairy House

Jenna has built a little fairy house to welcome all the fairies back to our garden including Lady Spring, she has built it in the crook of a very old English Oak Tree that stands proudly in our garden.

Holiday in the Bush

We have just come home after a wonderful holiday in the bush! These are some of the photos:

The sun was so beautiful, I had to photograph it from the game drive truck!

The clan on the game drive truck.

This tree is so beautiful, it is called a Wild Fig and is growing at the lodge where we were staying.

This little guy was running around, I have no idea what his proper name is, so if anyone does, please enlighten me.

We drove around for quite a while with the game ranger, trying to find the herd of elephants, finally we found them. They were crossing a plain. The mother elephant walked over to a tree, pushed it, split it in half and knocked it down! Wow this was amazing to see, and we were about 10 metres away!!

This beautiful tree is called a Fever Tree, it is magnificant! The bark is green and powdery. All the little black dots are Weaver nests. I have never seen so many nests in a tree before!!

We had a fantastic time!!

Our New Vegetable Garden

We have been working really hard for the past two weeks planning, designing and preparing a new vegetable garden at the bottom of our garden. The ground really wasn’t being used for anything, so we decidid to convert it into something productive.

We first cleared the area and then marked our beds, dug them using the double digging technique. This takes quite a while and then we added loads of compost and raised the beds so that they have a dome shape.

We saw this type of fencing in one of Monty Don’s books, called The Complete Gardiner, and loved it, so we decided to utilise this for our little fences and it turned out quite well. We have quite a few Mulberry trees and pruning season has just passed so we had plenty of long Mulberry branches for weaving the borders of our vege beds, they are nice and pliable, so therefore perfect.

Yesterday we all planted out seedlings, at the moment, we have beetroot, cabbage, butter lettuce and onions. We will also plant cucumbers, tomatoes, pumpkin, butternut etc… but the beds need to be prepared first. The whole family has been very involved in this project and have enjoyed it tremendously. I can’t wait for these veggies to grow. We are trying to become more self sufficient and also to have a continuous supply of vegetables, we are getting there!

I also love looking at Rhonda’s blog, called down to earth, she always has the most fantastic postings and information! Thanks Rhonda!!
