Creative Friday

Needle Saver / Book

Thanks so much for your lovely comments about my little Nativity Set, I really appreciate it!!! I have had many knitters write to me asking about the scale of the other farm animals and them fitting in with the nativity set. I have been working on the the donkey pattern so far and if he is knitted in a thin DK yarn with 3mm needles, he is the perfect scale for the nativity. I will be working on the rest of the patterns over the weekend and will be updating the animal sizes, yarns and needles sizes over on the Nativity Set thread on my Ravelry group. I think thas will be the best place to keep all the information together.

Happy knitting!

Christmas Santa Boot Ornament Pattern ©

I have been knitting Christmas ornaments for our tree this year, each year I knit a few more and like to share them here with you:) I have knitted this Santa Boot in a thick worsted yarn, I added a little black sole for the boot and a fluffy top. This boot is knit in the round with circular needles and I have used a 3 needle cast off, I have added a small tutorial for that.

Materials:

Oddments of beige brushed mohair yarn for the top of the boot.

Oddments of worsted red yarn for the boot.

Worsted black yarn for the sole of the boot

4mm circular needles

4mm straight needle for 3 needle cast off

Sewing needle

Scissors

Stuffing

Christmas Santa Boot Ornament Pattern ©:

Cast on 12 stitches in brushed mohair, join for knitting in the round for the magic loop technique, divide the stitches to have 6 stitches on each needle and knit 3 rounds.

Join the red worsted yarn

Knit 10 rows in the round

Rounds 11-17: Knit and kfb (knit into the front and back of the stitch to increase) into the stitch before and after the 2 middle stitches, knit to end. (26 stitches)

Rounds 18-20: Knit

Join the black worsted yarn and knit 2 rounds for the sole of the boot.

Turn the boot inside out keeping the stitches on the needles and cast off with three needle cast off.

For the 3 needle cast off you will need a straight 4mm needle.

Bring the stitches to the ends of both circular needles as seen in the above photo. Take the straight needle and knit into both the end stitches together on the 2 circular needles like you would normally knit a regular stitch resulting with one stitch on the 3rd needle (right straight needle).

Once again, knit together into the first stitches on the circular needles with the 3rd needle and a second stitch will end up on the straight needle. Pass the back stitch on the straight needle over the first stitch and you will have one stitch remaining.

Continue knitting the first stitches on the circular needles together with the straight needle and passing the back stitch over the first stitch of the extra and eventually you will have 1 stitch remaining. Bind this stitch off.

Here is a link to a You Tube video showing the 3 needle cast off.

Turn the boot onto the right side and sew in all the ends.

Add some stuffing inside the boot to make it fill out.

Add a little loop to your hanging ornament and you are finished!

Happy knitting!

Linda

Royal Purple Cowl and Yarn Along

I have knitted and finished the cowl just in time for my friend Joan’s birthday today!! I am so happy, I started it on Sunday, frogged some of it on Monday and then continued with two yarns instead of one. This is a luxurious cowl that I have knitted with Merino and kid Mohair. It is very soft indeed. This lighter colour actually has hints on purple in it and purple is Joan’s favourite colour. I really enjoy giving handmade presents to my friends, it’s lovely to knit a gift with someone in mind.

If you would like to knit a cowl too here is the pattern:

Notes:

The pattern is knitted in multiples of two, so if you would like to make it smaller or bigger as long as you have an even amount of stitches you will be fine.

The pattern is repeated twice for each colourway, until you have 5 stripes of colour, this will total 10 pattern repeats altogether.

Materials:

50 grams of DK purple yarn

50 grams of DK Kid Mohair yarn

5mm circular needles

6mm needle for a loose cast off

sewing needle

stitch marker

Pattern:

In the Merino yarn, cast on 200 stitches and join for knitting in the round, place your stitch marker.

Round 1: Knit

Round 2: Purl

Round 3: (Make one (take yarn around the needle), purl 2 together) across the round.

Round 4: (Make one (take yarn around the needle), purl 2 together) across the round.

Repeat the above pattern again in the same yarn.

Change to the Kid Mohair and knit 2 pattern repeats.

Remember to carry the different yarns up the inside of the knitting while alternating the colours so that you won’t need to join the yarn each time.

Continue alternating the different yarns after 2 repeats of the pattern until you have 5 colour bands or continue if you wish:)

Cast off with a 6mm knitting needle for a loose bind off.

Sew in all the ends

You are finished!

Thank you to my lovely Erin for modelling the cowl today.

Joining with Ginny today for the Yarn Along.

Santa Christmas Hat Pattern and Creative Friday

I’ve been working on a little Santa Hat pattern this morning, it’s a very versatile little hat and can be used as a hanging decoration on your tree, a name tag or place tag at the Christmas table. It knits up in no time at all!

Here is the pattern:

Santa Christmas Hat Pattern©

Materials:

Dk red merino yarn oddments

Dk white merino yarn oddments

Brushed mohair oddments

3.5 mm circular needles

Sewing needle

Pattern:

Notes:

When you change the colours of the yarn for the stripes, make sure you carry the yarns up the beginning inside area of the row by twisting them so that when you need to change colours, they will be there to knit with.

Cast on 20 stitches and join for knitting in the round.

Rounds 1-4: Knit 4 rounds of stocking stitch in brushed white mohair for the fluffy rim of the hat (knit a round then purl a round and repeat both again)

Rounds 5-8: Join the red yarn and knit 4 rounds in red.

Round 9-12: Tie on the beige merino yarn and knit carrying the red yarn up each round. Remember to carry the red yarn up the inside of the hat by twisting it around the beige each time you reach the end of the round and visa-versa with the other rounds.

Round 13: Knit (red)

Round 14: (Knit 1, knit 2 tog) across the round, knit 2 on the end (14 stitches) red

Round 15: Knit, red

Round 16: (Knit 1, knit 2 tog) across  the round, knit 2 on the end (10 stitches) red

Round 17: Knit, red

Round 18: Knit in beige yarn.

Round 19: Knit 1, knit 2 tog, knit 2, knit 1, knit 2 tog, knit 2. (8 stitches)beige

Round 20: Knit, beige

Round 21: Knit, beige

Round 22: Knit, red

Round 23: Knit 1, knit 2 tog, knit 1, knit 1, knit 2 tog, knit 1 (6 stitches)red

Round 24: Knit1, knit 2 tog, knit 1, knit 2 tog (4 stitches)red

Round 25: Knit 2 tog, knit 2 tog (2 stitches)red

Bind off by cutting the yarn and threading it onto a needle, thread the needle through the 2 remaining stitches, pull tight.

Sew in all ends, I used two of the strands from sewing up and tied them into a bow on the top of the hat.

Happy knitting!
