Today I bring you a lovely story and giveaway from Liz and Mike from The Sitting Tree
We are Liz and Mike, a pair of soon to be off grid homesteaders, living in the northwoods of Wisconsin with a trio of wildly creative and beautiful unschooled boys, an English Setter called Bailey, and a reclusive black cat who wandered into the house a few years ago and never left.
In the shop you’ll find an ever changing variety of natural, sustainable products including our homemade soaps, tree branch buttons and ornaments, upcycled clothing, knitting patterns and hand dyed yarns.
Our business began under an apple tree. I spent one whole summer teaching myself to knit, watching my kids tend their plots in the garden, counting stars, identifying plants, insects and animals, and wondering how I could combine all the bounties of nature into every aspect of our life, including work.
I began selling custom hand knit clothing, then moved onto pattern design and dyeing fiber. Customers kept asking for hand knits, but I didn’t have the time to put into custom work. Instead, I started working with thrifted wool sweaters, and fell in love with repurposing clothing and accessories! Recently, my husband joined me in crafting hand made soaps and working with recycled wood. As our family changes and grows, so do our products. You never know what may end up in the shop!
Our business is an extension of our daily lives. Each product in our shop is used every day in our home, and the process of creating is integrated into living, learning, and work. Most days, it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

I admire you for homesteading in northern Wisconsin. My husband and I are both from Wisconsin now living in Ohio. We know how brutal the winters can be and hand made woolens are a necessity rather than a luxury. I just finished an email or “you must be from Wisconsin if…” that were pretty close to experience for us. Your patterns are lovely and I would love to win them.
