Forest Glade Cowl 14

Hi, I have finished the Forest Glade Cowl, I’m really happy with the stitch technique that developed from a yarn over and a knit 2 together. Such simple stitches and together they have manifested into a slanting pattern forming a cowl. This cowl has been designed in multiples of 2, so it’s really easy to make it larger or smaller by reducing or increasing the stitches by 2 either way.

It measures 58 inches around and can wrap 2 or 3 times depending on how cold you are I guess:)

I enjoyed knitting in this Hartlam yarn, it’s a Merino with a hint of luxurious cashmere.

I have added the pattern to Ravelry and it’s a free pattern:) Yay I love sending patterns out into the world.

If you do knit this cowl, I would love to see your finished item, please would you link to the pattern on Ravelry and share it on my group or send me a photo if you like:)

Forest Glade Cowl Pattern ©

Materials:

5mm circular needles

100 grams of DK yarn

sewing needle for the ends

stitch marker

Abbreviations:

yo: yarn over (wrap the yarn under the needle and over to the back) This creates a hole.

Pattern:

Cast on 220 stitches and join for knitting in the round, place a stitch marker at the start of the round.

Round 1: Knit

Round 2: (yo, knit 2 together) repeat across the round.

Rounds 3-5: Repeat round 2.

Round 6: Knit

Round 7: Purl

Rounds 2-7 are the rounds that make up the pattern, I have done 6 pattern repeats altogether with my 100 gram skein of yarn. If you would like your cowl to be thicker, just continue with the pattern repeats, you will need another skein of yarn. When you are finished with your last pattern repeat just finish with a knit round and not a purl for the border.

Bind off loosely (use a larger needle size if you prefer)

Remember, if you would like to shorten or lengthen this cowl, just use multiples of 2:)

Happy knitting!

This happened to a girl in Boston-and she ended up putting her patterns on darker paper so that they were difficult to copy-I think she found it discouraged others not to try to copy. I gathered it helped some- instead of lime green she used a grass green. Sorry that this happened- You work hard on these patterns. I think it is a pretty low thing to do.

(My website is photography prints but I do other crafts.)

I absolutely love this infinity scarf — the stitching and the colors — but I crochet rather than knit. Do you know of any crochet stitches that would be similar to this?

Thanks for sharing this pattern and the photo…really beautiful work!

  22. where do i find hartlam yarn? love your cowl and what size is 5mm in us? January 10, 2013 at 5:26 am #

i love your cowl. if i can’t find the hartlam yarn, which yarn would knit up the same?

    • Linda January 10, 2013 at 8:51 am #

Thanks:) Here is the link for Hartlam: http://www.hartlam.co.za/
Otherwise any DK weight yarn will be perfect.

      • Julie September 16, 2015 at 8:50 pm #

I absolutely love this pattern and color. I have looked on the website but it’s South Africa and can’t find that color there.

Is there another brand of yarn I could substitute?

        Thank you,
        Julie

        • Julie September 23, 2015 at 8:39 pm #

I guess I didn’t get an answer to my question.

Hartland.com – South Africa, did not have this color. I would think buying American yarn would be ok.

Maybe I can find another site that can help me.
          Thanks anyway.

          Julie

  23. virginia rowlands January 10, 2013 at 5:30 am #

where do i find this yarn, hartlam?

  24. Carol Monette January 10, 2013 at 7:15 am #

IS it correct? – to start the row with a yarn over? Love the Cowl also my colors.

    • Linda January 10, 2013 at 8:54 am #

Absolutely Carol:) The yarn over at the beginning of the row balances out with the knit 2 together at the end of the other rows. It keeps a continuous flow for the pattern.
      Thanks so much:)

  30. Cristina February 5, 2013 at 4:05 pm #

Love this cowl! I only have one problem…I am not good with circular needles and use straight needles. Would this pattern be the same if I used the straight needles, except for having to sew the seam?

Thank you for any advice you can give.

    • Linda March 8, 2013 at 7:38 am #

      Hi Cristina,
It would possibly be different if you knitted it flat:)
Let me know how you go.
      Happy knitting

Such a beautiful cowl. Well done you!

  36. Yvette October 2, 2013 at 12:26 am #

Hi, I Love your Cowl. As you can tell by my email addy I Love fiber. But as a previous yarn shop Owner I was wondering how much yarn you used. I really don’t want to go all over the net looking for the yarn you used, but yarn is much more accurately measured in yards instead of ounces. The figure you gave is only good for the yarn you used. I don’t think you want everyone else that comes to this site to have to go looking all over the net either! I would much rather concentrate on your pattern.

    Thanks,
    Yvette

  37. Barbara October 2, 2013 at 2:01 am #

I am in the middle of making a scarf using the stitch that you use as row 2, so should be easy once I have it done to start another project using it. It is a really elegant stitch once you get your item finished.

  38. Wyominggal October 9, 2013 at 12:23 am #

I must confess, I have never understood the cowl “concept,” but this is so pretty that I have to make it as a gift for someone who appreciates cowls more than I do. Then I’ll use this same beautiful pattern to make a plain old scarf for myself. Thanks so much for sharing this gorgeous (and simple) pattern!

  39. Chrissy October 11, 2013 at 5:18 pm #

Linda, I love this pattern. Could you please tell me the yarn brand and color. I love this blue you used. Thanks!

When you start join after you cast , could you explain how you join and still knitt. I am new at this.

    • Linda November 4, 2013 at 6:03 am #

      Hi Jacky,
If you google a video on how to join for knitting in the round or the magic loop technique, this will help you.
      Happy knitting

  45. Heidi January 19, 2014 at 11:40 pm #

I love this cowl and I just started to make it this weekend. I do have a quick question; after the first 7 rounds, do you continue the pattern with only rounds 2-7 until the last round? Sorry, I’m a relatively new knitter and this is my first try with circular needles.

    • Linda March 4, 2014 at 8:22 pm #

      Hi Heidi,
      That’s correct:)
      Happy knitting

I’ve been looking for a pretty, not-bulky, easy cowl for a Christmas present. I’m starting this tonight. (I’ve had the yarn, just needed a pattern.) haha

I’ll be sure and share some pics.

  49. Linda CP September 7, 2014 at 3:22 am #

Linda, I am wondering how many rows 2-7 pattern repeats you did on the cowl you show in your pics. It looks like a good width. Thank you for the pattern and the answer.

    • Linda CP September 8, 2014 at 4:45 am #

Never mind, Linda. I finally see it on the instructions. I must have looked at it 10 and just now saw it.

  50. Linda CP September 22, 2014 at 8:41 pm #

Hi! I finished the cowl quickly – it’s a great pattern. It’s up at Ravelry, linked to you. Thank you so much for sharing.

the friend I would like to make this for is a short lady so I think 2 wrap arounds would be enough, could you tell me how many stitches to CO, also can’t tell how wide the cowl is. Thank you-can’t wait to get started!

  52. Donna April 24, 2015 at 7:23 pm #

when you call for a purl row on circular needle, do you purl that row or knit it as some of the patterns tell you to knit a purl row , please help me out on this.

    n
    n this.

Some patterns say to knit a purl row when using circular needles. Please help me out with this confusion.
    Thank you,
    Donna

  53. Linda May 2, 2015 at 7:58 pm #

    Hi Donna,
When the pattern says ‘purl row’, you purl that row on the circular needles.
    Happy knitting,
    Linda
    🙂

  54. Robin September 20, 2015 at 12:14 am #

After I finish round 7 would I start with round 1 or 2? Thank you for such a beautiful pattern to knit.

      Hi Robin,
You will start with round 2 🙂
      Happy knitting

Finally found the perfect cowl. I already have the yarn and have been searching and searching. Thanks for posting this. I know it’s been here for a few years, but this is the first I’ve seen it.

  56. Anita December 30, 2015 at 3:56 pm #

Hi. What length needles did you use

  57. Anita December 30, 2015 at 3:58 pm #

Never mind just saw in an earlier post

  58. Mary October 15, 2016 at 3:44 pm #

Could clarify something for me please? If I repeat round 2 four times, (round 2, then rounds 3-5), I’ll have really big holes with the yarn overs in the same spot. Should row 3 and 5 be k2tog and then yo, so they would alternate? Maybe I’m missing something.

  59. Mary October 15, 2016 at 3:48 pm #

Sorry, one more question, what should the gauge be approximately? I’m using a dk weight yarn and it looks awfully small compared to the picture. I don’t see a gauge when I look up the yarn you used. Thank you!!

  60. Jane January 19, 2017 at 10:58 am #

Love your pattern! Planning to make it with knit picks Preciosa tonal worsted yarn in maritime. Would it be ok to sell the finished product? I will definitely link it back to your pattern. Thanks for sharing!

I started this cowl today. Saw it last night through a link in an email. I’m making it for a SIL in color that used to be called dark avocado. She asked for green moss and it was the closest I had in my stash. It did surprise me that it fit on a 24 inch cable. I’ll post it when I finish it on Ravelry. Thanks for sharing this pattern with us.
