These are the first of our pot potatoes that I planted a while ago. During the hail storm, this particular plant was badly damaged. I decided to pull it up today as the leafy part of the plant had been battered. Imagine my surprise, when I discovered a 7 inch long potato and a few smaller ones!! I am very excited indeed! I think there is wonderful hope for pot potatoes in our future:) I’m going to plant up larger pots and see what happens. These haven’t been eaten by anything as they were protected in the confines of the pot and they are just beautiful!
This is what I did, I filled up each pot with rich, composted soil and only planted one potato per pot. The potato was planted right near the surface and then lovely new potatoes grew underneath. And that’s it! I have battled for years to try and avoid all the bugs that have come from far and near to eat huge holes in our potato crop, so yay, at last we succeed!

That is a beautiful potato! What is your secret to pot planting? We have gophers so bad here they eat everything. I discovered the gophers even tried to come up through our compacted decomposed granite under the artificial grass !! My husband hasn’t seen that yet….

What a gorgeous potato my friend. I am LOVING my veggie patch at the moment, and am so chuffed with my patty pans (this is the first time I have grown them!). They are growing so well and quickly too. I also have my first mielie growing. We are so blessed! 🙂 Have a good week ahead. Only 2 weeks of school left before the boys go on holiday, I can’t wait!

The pots I started off with weren’t very big, they are clay but now we will try larger ones about half a metre wide and deep. I have also bought hessian from the hardware store. I am going to sew large bags to grow potatoes in too. Anything to keep the crawling bugs out! 🙂

better than anything you can buy at the store.

It is a lovely feeling unearthing the spuds as you need them. I still grow mine in the ground albeit in raised beds but my mom uses car tyres, and as the plants need earthing up she adds another tyre and fills it with earth.
Something the old timer growers do here is to remove the flowers as soon as they appear, they say that the energy that goes into the flower then seed making is taken from the tubers. I have tried it a couple of years now and I do think we get more potatoes.

Very cool. We did some pot potatoes too, but at the very end of summer. We got just one new potato out of it, but the kids loved it. It was, of course, the cutest most delicious potato we ever ate. 🙂 Next spring, we will start this much earlier, and in a bigger pot.
