I really am grateful for our little homestead in the middle of suburbia. Today has been a warmer day so outside we went to do some work on the chicken coop. The young chickens have grown now so we thought it was a good time to integrate them among the older girls who live in the main chicken house. We opened the fence, took out the small wooden house and moved it away to the wall and now the little chickens live in the main chicken house too. We decided the smaller house can be an egg laying spot out in the garden for them…

Last week we noticed our number of eggs per day were down, on closer inspection of our grounds, we found a nest behind our water storage tank with 10 eggs in it. I found this one there the other day… They really are free range birds…

Walked down to our veggie garden and picked some fresh leeks for leek and potato soup for lunch today.

I’m not sure I would be very co-operative if I was a chook, either. I’m always doing stuff I probably shouldn’t and, well, that spot NEXT to the egg laying box does look all sorts of cosy.

Our ducks are always hiding their eggs, though, there is no drake around to fertilize them. We haven’t had a duck egg in so long and their naughty behaviour is rubbing off on the chickens.

We have 5 hens and a veggie garden and fruit trees, etc . . . . I’ve used the space as wisely as I can but am sure I can get more in LOL.
There is something really lovely about seeing children with hens/chickens and sending them out to collect eggs.

We just brought our first ever chickens to their coop for the first time today. We thought we had 26, but had never properly counted and apparently we had an extra. We haven’t put up a proper run for them yet so they are completely free range. I hope they don’t get themselves lost. Yours look like beauties 🙂

I love chickens, they are such amazing little creatures. To answer your question, our property is 3800 sq metres, I think that is an acre? I have fruit trees, veggies, but we have also started planting veggies and fruit trees amongst the other flowers and plants. Works well with the companion planting:)
