Apple Cozy / Jacket Knitting Pattern Tutorial

This was such a fun little project to knit up:) So quick using oddments of yarn…

This week is my Mamma4earth Etsy shop’s three year birthday, so I would like to share this apple cozy pattern with you to celebrate and because you are all so very kind to take the time to visit this spot and leave such heart warming words for me.

Enjoy the pattern:)

Materials:

4mm circular needles for Magic Loop
or
Four 4mm double pointed needles for knitting in the round
2 Double pointed needles for knitting the i-cord
Red yarn for the apple
Wool needle for sewing in the ends
Cute button:)

Pattern:

Cast on 10 stitches, join for knitting in the round, Magic Loop Technique, (or DPNs’ in the round)
Round 1: Knit
Round 2: Knit into the front and back of each stitch. (20 stitches)
Round 3: Knit.
Round 4: Knit into the front and back of each stitch. (40 stitches)
Rounds 5-15: Knit
Row 16: No longer knitting in the round, purl 2 together, purl the entire row, purl 2 together on the end. (38 stitches)
Row 17: Knit 2 stitches together, knit across row, knit 2 stitches together. (36 stitches)
Row 18: Purl 2 stitches together, purl across row, purl 2 stitches together. (34 stitches)
Row 19: Knit
Row 20: Purl
Row 21: Knit
Row 22: Purl
Row 23: (knit 1 stitch knit 2 stitches together across the row) (23 stitches)
Row 24: Purl
Bind off

From row 16 you are no longer knitting in the round, you are just knitting back and forth in rows as seen in the above photo.

Once you have cast off, pick up 2 stitches with your double pointed needles and knit an i-cord for a loop about 2 and a half inches long. (Just measure once you have sewn on your button to make sure of the length).

Sew the i-cord on to the top of the cozy where you picked up the 2 stitches and make a loop.

Sew in all your ends, sew on a sweet button opposite the loop, place an apple into your cozy and fasten the loop:)

You are finished!
Happy knitting
xo
Linda

I saw this on Ravelry last night and hoped you would write a post sharing it. TOTALLY ADORABLE! Our apple season will be starting here in another month or so. Michigan Apples are the best! We always make a day of apple picking at the orchard. I may have to knit a cozy or two up for gifts of my hand picked apples. Thank you for sharing. Have a great weekend!

I am about to knit my 4th apple cozy!! I love this pattern. I can knit one in about 45 minutes. It’s totally fun! They are really useful…no more bruises when the kid takes an apple to school.

All her teachers are getting one for Christmas.

Czn you tell me how to switch from knitting in the round with the Magic Loop to knitting back and forth? Do I need to switch to straight needles?

    • Linda November 22, 2012 at 10:49 am #

      Hi Valerie,
Instead of continuing to knit in the round, when you come to the end of the round, you will just turn your work and knit in stocking stitch back and forth on each row. Your knitting will no longer be joined but rather flat now:)
      Hope this helps.

    Hi Linda

I’m trying to knit the apple with 4 needles but I’ve hit a problem straight away in that I can’t divide 10 into 4 !?!?

I’ve never knitted in the round before even though I’ve been knitting since I was about 6 …. I’m now 40 !!!

    Thanks

    Helen

Helen. You don’t have to divide the stitches evenly. If you are using 4 needles I would recommend doing 3,3 and 4 then knitting with the empty needle. As long as you are careful to knit the joining stitches a little right, no one will know the difference and it will all work out.
