Knitted Santa Hat Christmas Ornament Pattern

This morning Erin said she would like to knit a Christmas ornament for our tree, we are going to add as many handmade ornamnets as we possibly can to our tree this year and we are in the process of making them now. She sat down with her pencil and paper and we set about designing a pattern. We worked out a design,  the decreasing rows and stitches and then and discussed how we would finish it off! What a proud moment for mama that Erie wants to write patterns! Erin asked if I would share our pattern with you, so of course I have and here it is:)

Materials:
Red and white yarn
Wool needle for sewing up
Ribbon for making your hanging ornament
Fleece for the end of your hat

Pattern:
This pattern is knitted flat with handspun yarn and size 4mm needles.

Row 5: Change to your red yarn and knit.

Row 32: Purl 2 together, purl 2 together, purl 2 together. (3 stitches)
Row 33: Knit 1, knit 2 together.
Row 34: Purl 2 together.
Bind off.

Finishing off:
Sew up on wrong side.
Turn onto the right side and attach your ribbon.
Sew on a little tuft of fleece on the end of you hat, bend the top of your hat over and attach to the side of your hat and you are done!
Enjoy:)

Every year I try to make home made ornaments for our tree. I just love the look of it. And the memories that go with each ornament. I look forward to the day when my daughter takes an interest in making stuff like this with me. She’s starting to!

Last spring we made little spring flower fairies out of felt. She did a good job!

This is so great! I have a few yards of white eye-lash yarn and a few yards of white suede yarn in my leftovers basket. I can now use them AND have presents for my craft group Christmas party!

    Hi Ladies,
I’m putting together our Knitting Guild newsletter for December and I’m looking for a couple of ornament patterns I could include. Your’s tops my list!!!! would you please grant permission to reprint it if I include your requirement: “Please note, this pattern is for personal use only, and not for resale, items knitted from this pattern may not be sold for commercial purposes, thank you” I would really love to include it.

    thanks

    Thanks Erin and Linda,

I will make some of the hats for our Christmas tree find raiser at the History Museum. Many organizations decorate a tree and them People vote for them with a dollar a vote. The money goes to the museum. We are a group of charity and knitters and others that meet on Tuesday mornings and we thought it would be a benefit to our little museum in Gardnerville, NV USA

Linda, maybe I am just tired tonight, but I am actually having problems with the directions on this hat. I got through row 7 just fine. Then it says to continue in stocking stitch for rows 8 to 11, which would be a purl row, knit row, purl row, knit row. But then row 12 says to decrease in knit, but the next row (in stocking stitch) would be a purl row. I find the same problem with the rest of the pattern. Is the pattern wrong, or am I confusing myself? Thanks!

Anna, I have corrected the pattern, thanks so much for letting me know!
      Happy knitting
      Kind regards
      Linda

You are very welcome, and thank you! I knitted several last night, each one different as I tried to figure out exactly how it was supposed to be. Each one came out different (still not like the corrected version), yet each one was adorable! I will try this version now. Either my tree will have several on it, or all my friends will get one.
